Netflix is diving into the topic of sports and showing the darker side of the sports industry. Starring Power star Michael Rainey Jr., the film “Amateur,” tells the story of a young boy who strives to achieve his dreams to play for the NBA but navigate through the seedy world amateur sports.

The drama follows 14-year-old Terron (Rainey Jr.) who is just discovering his talents on the court after a video of him playing goes viral. Not long after, the young teen was offered the opportunity to attend a prestigious prep school with a full-ride scholarship, given by the school’s basketball coach. The film follows Terron as he tries to balance schoolwork, basketball, and becoming a prospect of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Although the opportunity sounds perfect, not all glitter is gold and Terron begins to realize that things are not like it was promised – questioning whether this path is right for him.

Along with Rainey Jr., the film stars Chicago Fire actor Brian White, Sharon Leal, Cory Parker, Josh Charles and Ashlee Brian. The Netflix film is helmed by The West Side director Ryan Koo, with San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker serving as producer.

Amateur is now streaming on Netlfix.
